In the 1990s, new antipsychotic agents became available. These medications have been effective in treating a broad range of symptoms, and they potentially have a reduced incidence of side effects when compared with the older generation of drugs. These new medications also pose a minimal risk of interactions with other medications -- another important advantage for the elderly, who are likely to be taking several medications for a number of illnesses.
There is a great deal of research going on today relating to Alzheimer's disease that may lead to effective treatment, or even prevention, of that disease and some of the other dementias. Cholinesterase inhibitors represent one class of medications being studied. Other studies are examining the role of estrogen, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and vitamin E. We're learning a lot and making progress. We are hopeful that we'll soon have many more answers to the puzzle.
