Behavior Symptoms

We can group the behaviors that often result from dementia into four general categories: verbally nonaggressive behavior (for instance, repeating the same thing over and over), verbally aggressive behavior (e.g., shouting or yelling at someone), physically nonaggressive behavior (e.g., pacing), and physically aggressive behavior (e.g., hitting, kicking, or biting). We'd like to point out here that we are talking about inappropriate displays of these behaviors; we're not talking about someone who is reacting appropriately to a distressing situation or acting in self-defense.

Defining the type of problem behavior helps us determine how we can address it. And we want to address it as quickly as possible in order to maintain the dignity and quality of life for the individual involved.
