Cognitive Function

Dementia is one of the conditions that we in long-term care know a lot about. That's because nearly half of all people 85 years old or more suffer from some degree of dementia. Dementia can be progressive, with a gradual decline in mental functioning such as in Alzheimer's disease. Or it can be stable, not changing much over time. That is often the case when there is brain damage following a blow to the head. Sometimes we see a dementia that is reversible -- when a person is in rehab immediately following a stroke, for example. But most of the time it is irreversible, and we concentrate our efforts on helping the resident adjust and cope with his or her current level of functioning.
