Large deviations from the average can be used as an early warning signal for potential problems. For example, if antibiotic use is significantly higher than average, there many be overuse of these medications, or there may be an infection control problem. In either case, steps can be taken to address the problem. Continued monitoring of OSCAR data helps show if progress is being made.
