The MDS is a comprehensive rating system that we use to collect information about many different aspects of your loved ones' condition. These range from their ability to think, communicate and hear, to disease diagnoses, to the condition of their skin, teeth, and gums. They cover every aspect of health and functioning. It is a very complex tool, but basically what it does is ask specific questions about your loved one. Who are they? How do they feel? How are they doing? What can they do? What do they need?
The MDS gives us a picture of your loved one as a whole individual. As we continue to use the MDS, we can compare data to show any changes over time and find problems early, so they can be managed. The MDS provides very useful information that really helps us fine-tune our care plans and personalize care for every resident as their needs change.
