Regardless of the type of pain control medication, we consider the ideal dose to be the lowest dose possible to control pain. Sometimes a short-acting medication is needed, sometimes a long-acting form is used, and sometimes if pain breaks through unexpectedly, a "rescue" dose will be given for fast relief of pain. For chronic pain, we schedule dosing around the clock to prevent a resurgence of pain. We also use round-the-clock dosing because, as I mentioned before, continuous pain relief is maintained better this way and it is also better for the resident.
