There are a number of medications and classes of medications used for the control of pain. Nonprescription acetaminophen is one that is probably familiar to you. Acetaminophen is useful in controlling mild pain of joints and muscles and is generally considered quite safe. Sometimes acetaminophen is all that a resident needs to control mild pain, so that's all we will give. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, are also useful in arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Ibuprofen and naproxen are examples of NSAIDs. COX-2 inhibitors are a new class of medications similar to NSAIDs in their effectiveness, but with fewer or no gastrointestinal side effects. We want to tell you a little more about the drugs shown here, including traditional centrally acting pain medication and newer pain control agents. We'll also talk about the things we consider when selecting a pain medication that's right for your loved one.
