When we treat a resident who needs relief from pain, we include nondrug treatment options whenever possible. For acute pain, such as that following surgery or an injury, rest is appropriate while healing takes place. However, with the chronic pain caused by arthritis, for example, prolonged rest can actually make matters worse. Moving and stretching - perhaps in a dance therapy or exercise group - are important to maintain mobility. Our physical and occupational therapists also provide appropriate exercises and activities to help your loved one maintain the best function possible. Other nondrug therapies, such as massage or the application of heat or cold packs, can have a soothing effect, as can learned relaxation techniques. Regardless of the nondrug therapy used, we make sure we explain to the resident what is happening, because any event or procedure can be unsettling if it is not understood.
