There are some very important medical reasons why we want to control pain before pain controls the patient. For one thing, once pain has become established and severe, it is more difficult to control than pain that is treated appropriately and aggressivel yearly on. Pain has been found to depress the immune system, so controlling pain can potentially have far-reaching benefits to general health. Preventing the experience of pain is better, from both a compassionate and a medical point of view, than treating it after it has broken through. A resident who is not suffering from pain will be able to participate more fully in rehabilitation programs. A resident whose pain is controlled will feel more like eating and benefit from better nutrition. And when a resident is not in pain, they will be more likely to socialize and participate in activities they enjoy. Being free from pain means being able to enjoy a better quality of life, something we all want for your loved one.
