For our residents who are unable or unwilling to communicate in those ways, we have learned to look for the subtle signs of uncontrolled pain. We may see that they're resting or lying down much more than usual during the day. They may refuse to participate in activities they used to enjoy, and have a generally negative outlook. They may have more trouble than usual sleeping or they may lose their appetite. And they may be emotionally distressed or appear disheveled.
