Diseases Associated with Pain

A diagnosis of certain disorders or diseases also helps to tell us whether there is likely to be pain. Although pain itself is not a natural part of aging, there are some diseases that often cause pain, such as cancer and osteoarthritis, that are generally more common in an elderly population. Rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, and neurologic problems such as diabetic neuropathy are among other diseases that cause pain -- sometimes different types of pain that call for different types of treatment. Assessing pain is a challenge that involves our entire care team -- nursing staff, doctors, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, activities director, and others. It also involves you. You know your loved one best, and your observations and input are extremely valuable to us.
