Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

1. Describe the prevalence and economic burden of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fractures in the United States.

2. Discuss the bone remodeling process and describe the changes in this process that result in osteoporosis.

3. Enumerate the WHO criteria for the definition of osteoporosis in adult women according to bone mineral density.

4. Describe the pharmacologic effects of calcium and vitamin D on the skeleton, and recite the NIH Consensus Conference guidelines regarding optimal calcium intake.

5. Outline the guidelines from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation on the diagnosis, prevention, and management of osteoporosis.

6. Describe the current controversies regarding hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with respect to treatment of osteoporosis.

7. Outline the role of bisphosphonates, calcitonin, selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), and hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in the management of osteoporosis, and describe their clinical efficacy, mechanisms of action, precautions, administration guidelines, and adverse effects.

8. Describe the role of phytoestrogens and other investigational drug therapies, such as parathyroid hormone in the prevention and/or treatment of postmenopausal bone loss.
