Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:
1. Define pain and describe the prevalence of pain in the community-dwelling and long-term care elderly.
2. Characterize the problems associated with pain in the elderly, barriers to the treatment of pain, and the clinical consequences of undertreatment, especially in the frail elderly.
3. Describe the assessment of pain and its place in the management of chronic pain.
4. Identify the role of each therapeutic drug category used in the management of pain.
5. Review the indications, adverse drug reactions, and administration of each non-narcotic analgesic used in the management of pain.
6. Enumerate the advantages and disadvantages for the use of narcotic analgesics in the elderly for the management of chronic nonmalignant pain.
7. State the recommended approach to management of chronic pain in older persons as advocated by organizations such as the American Geriatric Society.
