Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:
1. Describe the epidemiology of heart failure in the geriatric population.
2. Discuss the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in heart failure and the effects of aging on cardiac function.
3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of heart failure in an elderly patient.
4. Outline the importance of determining the etiology of heart failure and the role of specific diagnostic tests, including imaging studies,
5. Understand the role of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs), diuretics, digoxin, vasodilators, beta-blockers and angiotensin II receptor antagonists in the pharmacologic management of heart failure due to left ventricular systolic dysfunction.
6. Enumerate the highlights (design elements and results) of the pivotal clinical trials incorporating pharmacotherapy for the management of heart failure.
