Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able
to:
1. Describe the incidence and economic burden of osteoporosis and
osteoporotic fractures in the United States.
2. Discuss the bone remodeling process and describe the changes in
this process that result in osteoporosis.
3. Describe the pharmacologic effects of calcium and vitamin D on the
skeleton, and recite the NIH Consensus Conference guidelines
regarding optimal calcium intake.
4. Outline the guidelines from the American Association of Clinical
Endocrinologists, and the National Osteoporosis Foundation Consensus
Statement on the diagnosis, prevention, and management of
osteoporosis.
5. Describe the clinical effects of hormone replacement therapy with
respect to osteoporosis and coronary artery disease.
6. Discuss issues regarding the optimal age of initiation and
duration of hormone replacement therapy for osteoporosis prevention
and treatment.
7. Recite adverse effects commonly encountered with hormone
replacement therapy and outline a plan for managing these effects and
describe contraindications and precautions that should be considered
when instituting hormone replacement therapy.
8. Outline the role of bisphosphonates, calcitonin, selective
estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs), and fluoride, in the management
of osteoporosis, and describe their clinical efficacy, mechanisms of
action, precautions, administration guidelines, and adverse
effects.
9. Describe the role of flavonoids and other investigational drug
therapies in the prevention and/or treatment of postmenopausal bone
loss.
