Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:
Compare and contrast the epidemiology, clinical presentation, and clinical course of dementia and delirium in the elderly.
List medications, medical disorders, and medical conditions that may produce or exacerbate psychotic and behavioral disturbances associated with delirium and dementia in the elderly patient.
Describe the types and etiology of noncognitive behavioral disturbances associated with dementia in elderly patients and identify target behaviors that are most likely to respond to drug therapy.
Outline a rational therapeutic approach for the management of the aforementioned behavioral disturbances in an elderly patient.
List nonpharmacologic strategies (such as, environmental manipulation) that can help alleviate behavioral disturbances associated with dementia in the elderly patient.
Discuss the efficacy, adverse effects, dosing, drug interactions, and monitoring parameters of antipsychotics, and the potential role of non-neuroleptic agents in the management of behavioral disturbances associated with dementia in the elderly.
Compare and contrast the side effect profile of high, intermediate and low potency neuroleptics, and discuss how these differences affect the choice of an agent.
Discuss how the newer "atypical" antipsychotics (clozapine, olanzapine, risperidone, quetiapine, and ziprasidone) differ from the "traditional" agents, and outline their role in the management of behavioral disturbances associated with dementia in the elderly.
