Upon completion of this program the participants should be able to:

1. Describe the incidence and prevalence of epilepsy in the elderly.

2. List the classification of epilepsy, identify characteristics, and clinical manifestations of common seizure types encountered in the elderly.

3. Identify the etiology of seizures and exacerbating factors in the elderly.

4. Discuss the goals and principles of antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy in the elderly.

5. Outline the physiologic changes that accompany aging and their impact on the disposition of AEDs in the elderly.

6. List the Îold conventional AEDsâ and the Înewer second generationâ AEDs, and identify the appropriate AED for the specific seizure type.

7. Describe the limitations of the Îold conventional AEDsâ in the elderly.

8. Describe the clinical indications, pharmacokinetics, dosing guidelines, and adverse drug experiences of the newer AEDs.

9. List five reasons for obtaining therapeutic drug levels of AEDs in the elderly.
