Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

1. Define dementia and differentiate potentially reversible dementias from the most common types of nonreversible dementias.

2. Describe the pathophysiology , clinical presentation, and risk factors for multi-infarct dementia (MID).

3. Briefly discuss histopathologic changes and neurochemical alterations in Alzheimer's Disease which form the basis of treatment approaches.

4. List the risk factors for Alzheimer's disease.

5. Discuss the use of cholinesterase inhibitors in the treatment of cognitive symptoms for people at different stages of Alzheimer's disease and give advantages and disadvantages for each agent.

6. Briefly discuss novel treatment approaches and their rationale for use in Alzheimer's disease.
