The typical course
lasts approximately 10 years, however it has recently been reported that
patients with AD are living longer. The survival experience of a cohort
of 960 AD patients was followed from 1960-1984. The authors found that patients
with more recent onset (1975-1984) tend to live longer than those who were
diagnosed during the period (1960-1974). Increased survival may be due to
earlier recognition of the disease, good nursing home care and the increase
in nursing home beds in the study community (Rochester, Minn).
