Some studies suggest a correlation between a history of
head trauma and Alzheimer's disease. The correlation is not conclusive
at this time.
Several studies have demonstrated a relationship between
educational achievement and socioeconomic status in adult life and AD.
It has been suggested that low education may be a surrogate marker for
AD, perhaps by an association with malnutrition in childhood, infection
and brain damage, or toxic exposures in early life.
Some other possible risk factors include exposure to heavy
metals and female gender. Aluminum no longer is considered to play a role
in the etiology of AD, although it is a neurotoxin. The patterns of impairment
produced by aluminum exposure are not compatible with those seen in AD.
