Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

1. Enumerate five facts about the demographic shifts in the US elderly population, and the projected rise in the frail elderly requiring nursing home care.

2. Describe the age-related physiologic changes (pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic) that occur with aging and their impact on the disposition of drugs in the elderly.

3. State five factors that contribute to the increased risk of adverse drug experiences in the elderly and the high frequency of this population requiring hospitalization.

4. Discuss therapeutic drug categories contributing to cognitive impairment in the elderly, and how the pharmaceutical care process can assist the health care practitioner in minimizing and/or avoiding such drug-related outcomes.
