Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the participant should be able to:

  1. Define anemia and its prevalence in an elderly population as a symptom of pathological illness, not a natural consequence of aging.
  2. Describe the most common types of anemia found in the elderly.
  3. Discuss red blood cell function, destruction and formation, including the role of erythropoietin in its production.
  4. Define common laboratory values used in assessing a patient for anemia.
  5. Classify anemia in the elderly population based on etiology and morphology using laboratory values and clinical signs and symptoms.
  6. Outline some drugs implicated in drug-induced hemolytic anemia in the elderly.
  7. Discuss various pharmacologic treatment modalities and management based on the etiology of anemia.
  8. Describe the potential consequences of untreated anemia in the elderly.
